OCD and Showering

When my son Dan was in the throes of severe obsessive-compulsive disorder in 2008, he would sit in his “safe chair” for eight hours at a time. He was literally “stuck.” While I didn’t realize it at the time, getting stuck, or more accurately, becoming a slave to OCD’s demands, is part of what severe OCD is all about. Never-ending compulsions take over your life as you try to achieve certainty that all is well.

I’ve always found it particularly heartbreaking when OCD latches on...

Study Probes How ADHD Meds Improve Cognition & Behavior in Kids

Although stimulants have been used for years to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in school-aged children, just how they reduce symptoms and improve behavior hasn’t been clear.

A new study from researchers at the University of Buffalo now fills critical gaps about the way in which stimulants enhance cognitive functions.

“This is the first study to demonstrate that improving short-term working memory and the ability to inhibit are at least part of the way that...

New Research May Support the Existence of Empaths

Do empaths exist? Many people who claim to be highly sensitive or intuitive to the emotions of others and even to feel what others feel would respond with an enthusiastic “yes.”

The scientific studies that are often used to demonstrate that empaths exist, however, provide indirect evidence.

This includes research showing the existence of mirror neurons in the brain, which are said to enable us to read and understand each other’s emotions by filtering them through our own (Iacobani,...

Future blogs of mine will cover this and its succeeding events in more depth.

Surviving the Class Reunion: Where Past and Present Collide

I take a deep breath. Pushing open the door, I’m hit by a sea of faces and a hubbub of noise. Everything is a blur, and I can’t recognize anyone at first. But then I spot my good friend Marilyn. And, yes, I think that’s John — the one who nearly blew up the school with homemade fireworks. As Marilyn and I embrace, and talk eagerly, other faces begin to look familiar. Memory awakens, and names and details bubble up to the surface.

This is by far the most challenging reunion I’ve...

Mind-Body Therapies May Reduce Anxiety in Teens

Anxiety affects approximately one in three American teens, with more than eight percent experiencing severe impairment in daily functioning. But according to a new review published in The Nurse Practitioner, mind-body therapies, such as mindfulness, yoga and hypnosis, can play a vital role in reducing the very common problem of adolescent anxiety.

“Mind-body therapies encompass self-regulation and positive thinking…to help promote self-control, physical health, and emotional...

In Anorexia, Brain’s Reward Response to Taste Tied to High Anxiety

In patients with anorexia nervosa, the brain’s reward response to taste is alternatively linked with high anxiety and a drive for thinness, and this association could play a role in driving the disorder, according to a new study published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry.

Researchers at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus monitored a large group of patients with anorexia nervosa as they tasted sugar during brain imaging.

The findings show that the brain response of anorexics...

Approval Seeking or Approval Sucking: Whose Opinion of You Matters Most?

“Most fears of rejection rest on the desire for approval from other people. Don’t base your self-esteem on their opinions.” – Harvey Mackay

Easier said than done at times, Harvey, since many are pre-disposed to linking their physical and psychological survival on the thumbs up from family, friends, co-workers and in some cases, strangers they pass on the street. Those with social anxiety often project what they believe people think about them, to the point of paranoia. In my...

New Drug Shows Promise on 2 Alzheimer’s Fronts

An experimental drug for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) was shown to both slow cognitive decline and clear the sticky protein clumps in the brain that are a hallmark of the devastating illness – for some patients.

Researchers presented the latest findings Wednesday at the  Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Chicago, and while this drug is the first to affect both cognition and the neural tangles, the reception was mixed.

“This is the first large clinical trial to...

Conscious: How to Turn Off Your Autopilot

Today’s accelerating pace of disruptive change challenges many people’s ability to adapt. Despite our best efforts, many of us feel left behind — failing to learn quickly enough to move with the times.

The ultimate culprit is not simply a lack of awareness of developing trends or technologies. I believe it’s more fundamental than that: Many of us act on autopilot most of the time. When the going gets tough, those of us on autopilot tend to crash — or wind up landing someplace we...

How Florence's experience of stigma at Primary School shaped her life

Last week the government announced that mental health education be made compulsory in England and that pupils will be taught how to build mental resilience as well as how to recognise when their peers are struggling. Brain Link Identified Between Depression and Poor Sleep

A new study may help shed light on why so many people with depression suffer from poor sleep.

Researchers from the University of Warwick (UK) and Fudan University (China) found a strong connection between the areas of the brain associated with short-term memory, one’s sense of self, and negative emotions in people with depression. This association can cause sufferers to dwell on bad thoughts and potentially lead to impaired sleep quality.

“The relation between depression and sleep has...

Integrated Cognitive & Motor Training May Slow Dementia – Even Reverse It

New research suggests that just 30 minutes of visually guided movements per week can slow and even reverse the progress of dementia. Experts believe the training is particularly useful for early stage dementia as it helps to strengthen neural networks thereby improving cognitive and functional abilities.

In the study, York University investigators developed a game which used rules to make visually guided movements. Participation in the training slowed the progress of dementia and, for some,...
